To Hollywood And Back in 84 Hours…

Whatup Y’all.

Had a great trip to LA last weekend, here’s the recap:

An hour after I hit town I was having an Eggs Benny brunch on an outside patio in Malibu, followed by toes in the sand and a tentative dip in the (cold) ocean. That night I played a solo show at The Other Door in Noho. My super talented friend Maura from the band AURA lent me an extra keyboard and accessories (Thanks doll!) I covered “I Wish” by a little-known artist named Stevie Wonder for the first time and took a loooong solo at the end. Good sound/vibe in the room, thanks to Sheena Metal from LA Talk Radio for hooking me up with the gig. Post-show drinks and food at The Federal. Took a tour of The Simpsons animated studio, my friend Karen from high school who always was sketching cartoons is now a director! (Serendipity, baby). Stayed with one of my best friends who has a house in North Hollywood with a sick backyard patio (not a lot of those in New York City) so we BBQ’d up some crazy london broil and salmon, corn on the cob and a lot of other stuff with a bunch of our college friends in the biz who relocated out west, drank a bit and smoked some great government issued pot. My friend Joe is the Art Director for Punked and starring on a new Disney practical joke show this summer called Code 9, he’s an inventive carpenter fixer-upper guy, and he’s been restoring this tiny Razor mini-chopper. I had a lot of fun riding that crazy thing around the ‘hood. Shockingly, LA had a rainy day on Saturday, so we scrapped the beach plan and saw ‘Hunger Games’ & enjoyed some serious hot dogs at Vicious Dogs. That night we hit an improv show at Upright Citizens Brigade starring Ed Helms from The Office and The Hangover & a kickass Bluegrass band called The Get Down Boys, who were fantastic. After that we hit Birds bar & 101 Diner. Next day I hiked Runyon canyon with my friend Candice, a former Knicks dancer and talented actress I used to do industrial gigs with back in the day. I always love hiking different canyons when I’m in LA, but always seem to forget how different it is than walking around the city, even running up and down subway steps. The next few days I had pains in my legs and knees I didn’t know existed! Also that day I hit the trifecta of awesome in terms of meals. Woke up to a homemade Steak, Eggs and Potatoes/Peppers breakfast, had some crazy Chocolate Chip Pancakes for lunch post-hike with my cool Australian friend Brooke who I met in NY then moved LA, as actresses tend to do.. then hit my favorite west coast fast food - Fatburger, obviously - for dinner on my way to LAX. Brooke and I hit some cool thrift stores as well (score!) and chilled in Hollywood for the afternoon, hitting a happy hour where we ran into a few of her Aussie friends. Everybody I know out there ran into other people they knew while we were hanging, was amazing that the city isn’t as big as you think. All in all, was a pretty fun and jam-packed trip. Saw a lot of friends, didn’t really sit still at all. Actually I can probably use a vacation, now that I’m back from my vacation! Lots of pressure to move out to LA from my friends as usual, but don’t think I could last more than a few months. As I always say: Los Angeles has always been 3 hours behind New York, and it always will be.
